  Children and Youth

Children in the Orthodox Church are customarily baptized and chrismated as young infants, so they are full members of the church from their earliest days. They participate in the Divine Liturgy as they are able and, once baptized, receive Holy Communion regularly.

At St Paul's we expect and welcome children. The Divine Liturgy is full of things to hear and things to see and the best way to learn about it is to be in the midst of it often. We do have a windowed crying room to give parents with young children a place to withdraw when they need it while still being part of the service.

Once children reach elementary school age there are increasing opportunities for participating in the life of the congregation. Girls may begin taking the collection under the guidance of an older girl while boys may begin assisting as altar servers. Junior and senior high youth sing in the choir and are encouraged to read the Epistle and the Hours, bake Prosfora and work on parish service projects.

Church school for children PreK - 12th meets weekly during the school year after the Liturgy. This year there are classes for PreK-K, 1st-3rd, 4th-5th, Junior Youth Group (6th-8th) and Senior Youth group (9th-12th.) The elementary school classes follow a common curriculum and also get together for joint events and projects.

They have organized a sock and mitten collection given to St Nicholas on December 4 and donations for Hygiene kits for Haiti. They told the Christmas story to the congregation in the annual church school play and joined the Youth Group in presenting a youth-directed play about the life of St. Paul.

The Youth Group also enjoyed a hard-fought year-long Bible and church history Jeopardy tournament, and organized the annual Parish Harvest Party bonfire and the Souper Bowl of Caring collection for the homeless. Working in groups students planned and presented lessons, resulting in a sock puppet history of the early Alaskan missionary saints and an Easter egg hunt for Bible verses and candy. Just for fun the group has gone laser tagging, bowling with the Greek Orthodox youth group and visited the Renaissance Festival and King's Island.
